Neroche Woodlanders is going digital!

Join us for our first live online course:
 
STEP INTO WOODLAND

Audience/level: 
This is an informal course designed for non-technical beginners, providing an introduction for those who have experienced woodlands a little, but have no ecological knowledge or experience, and would like to learn more.
 
Learning objectives:
  1. To introduce participants to some basic elements of woodland ecology, and natural history.
  2. To provide participants with a virtual experience of some elements of woodland character.
  3. To equip participants with knowledge that will enhance their understanding of the woods when they are next able to visit them in person.
 
Delivery:
Structure:                   Four 45-minute ‘episodes’, delivered over two weeks in May 2020, via Zoom
Dates and time:        Tues 19th May, Thurs 21st, Tues 26th, Thurs 28th, 7.00-7.45pm each evening
Audience:                   For a group of up to 12 participants 
Tutor:                           Gavin Saunders

To book a place: 
Places on this course are limited to 12 on this occasion, and will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis to qualifying applicants (who must live in Somerset and be 19 or over).


To book, you must complete the SS&L enrolment form, which you can access here.  Then save the form to your computer, and attach it to an email, and send to this address.

  • Meet the trees
  • The structure of woodlands
  • A ‘walk’ to meet some woodland flowers
  • Quiz: Name that tree!

Episode 2:  Stepping through woodland cycles
  • The seasons in temperate woodlands 
  • Conifers and broadleaves
  • Growth and decay
  • The many lives of a tree
  • Exercise: How to measure the height of a tree

​Episode 3:  A step back into woodland history
  • Woods in time and space
  • Natural processes in woodlands
  • How people’s actions mimic natural processes
  • What is ancient woodland and how do we know it?
  • Quiz: Ancient woodland indicators

Episode 4:  Meet the residents: woodland fauna
  • Birds – key species and evidence of them
  • Mammals – key species and evidence of them
  • Insects – key species and evidence of them
  • Quiz: What’s this a sign of?
